Writing Home: American Women Abroad, 1830-1920 by Mary Suzanne Schriber, "Writing Home is an important contribution to American literary studies. Schriber does a fine job of embedding American women's travel writing in the larger tradition of the genre, and her forthright and accessible style will make this book valuable to scholars and students in the field". -- Richard S. Lowry, College of William and Mary Before the 1830s, women's travels outside the United States were infrequent and usually undertaken in the company of a male relative. With the advent of steam liners and railroads, however, international travel became an accessible and acceptable activity for groups of white middle- and upper-class American women. Although men had been publishing travel narratives for years, these new women travelers soon discovered that their own writings were popular reading back home. In Writing Home, Mary Suzanne Schriber offers the first comprehensive analysis of the large body of U.S. women's travel literature written between the pre-Civil War years and World War I. Examining almost a century's worth of published book-length accounts, ranging from the travel diaries of ordinary women to the narratives of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Edith Wharton, Schriber argues persuasively for the importance of gender considerations in the reading of all travel texts. She discusses the differences between men's and women's constructions, in writing, of their experiences abroad -- differences that extend beyond mere observations to the way each gender is treated in foreign cultures, responds to them, and seizes the occasion of travel and writing to do cultural work. Schriber accounts for the popularity of travel writing by recognizing that it provided the necessary "others"against which Americans sought to define themselves and their culture during this period. "Writing home" meant not only writing to home but writing about home, redefining "home" from one's perspective abroad. She asserts that U.S.

Dingle, Titans of the B.E. 100s Black CEOs Who Redefined and Conquered American Business "Money has no color. If you can build a better mousetrap, it wont matter whether youre black or white. People will buy it." A. G. Gaston, Black Enterprises 1992 Entrepreneur of the Century For more than 25 years, Black Enterprise, the premier African American business magazine, has ranked and chronicled the B.E. 100s -- its exclusive listing of the nations top-grossing, black-owned businesses. Generating more than $14 billion in annual revenue and employing more than 55,000 people, these companies represent a vibrant and often overlooked segment of the American economy. Their CEOs, among the wealthiest and most powerful players in the black business community, have been the vanguard of an entrepreneurial revolution. They achieved greatness despite a lack of capital, diminished access, and even outright racism, using their imagination and drive to seize opportunities and break through barriers. First in the new Black Enterprise series, Titans of the B.E. 100s profiles eleven of these remarkable leaders of the largest black-owned businesses. Covering a broad cross-section of companies and industries, this compelling book features both todays emerging entrepreneurs and the established CEOs, revealing the secrets of how they beat the odds and the hard truths about the myriad challenges theyve faced. No other book brings together so many contemporary black business success stories. Through in-depth, first-person interviews, youll meet the titans who started their companies from the ground up and were relentless in doing so; who filled a void in the consumer market and, in turn, revolutionized wholeindustries; and who love the companies that they run and are energized by new ventures. Each chapter profiles a different business legend: From John H. Johnson, founder of Ebony and Jet magazines; to Herman J.
